Up-lighting 101: The bare bones

Up-lighting is a series of lights, set up around a room (or outside a building), placed on or near the floor, shining up toward the walls. The lights could be any color, from a white to a red to green. When they're implemented, the house lights at the venue can be dimmed. When used properly, up-lighting can greatly enhance the ambiance of the room in a very elegant way.

What should I use up-lighting for?:

Up-lighting is a cost effective way to minimizing your decorating costs while maximizing the impact on the overall look of your event. There are many ways to use up-lighting. think of using up-lights to bring life to your:

• Head table
• Tents
• Drapes
• Entrance
• Arch
• Cake (using "down-lighting")...don't worry...Our LED's won't melt the icing!
• architectural room features (windows, columns, etc...)
• Decorative additions (such as pillars, floral arrangements, easels, etc...)

LED advantages:

There are several advantages to LED up-lighting including; environmental friendliness, low heat (keeping fire hazards and curious fingers safe!) and colour selection/ variety to name a few.

Static (stand alone) up-lighting:

Up-lights are set in place & left for the duration of the event. They are used to accentuate the natural architecture or decor of the room. Most up-lights can be adjusted to a variety of colours however, when standing alone, up-lights are limited in their colour range.

Motion (programmed) up-lighting:

Not to be confused with moving lights, "motion up-lighting" simply refers to the fact that the colours within the lighting units are changing, thus changing the mood of the room. When programmed, up-lights can take on virtually any colour to match your colour scheme or desired mood for the room.

Programmable vs. stand alone:

It really depends on personal preference and budget. If up-lighting is "standing alone", the ability to change the colour is limited. Programmable lighting via DMX controller enables lighting colour & intensity to be changed with the natural lighting in the room. If colour & mood is essential to your event, we recommend having your lighting programmed. If you seek only to add visual interest to the room, stand alone may be a suitable alternative for you.
